If your circuit breaker is hot to the touch, what does that mean? A hot circuit breaker, says Capital’s lead electrician, Scott Terry, could be a sign of a fire hazard or some other problem with your breaker, electrical panel, or wiring.
This shouldn’t be confused with a warm circuit breaker. A slightly warm panel or breaker can just mean that your equipment is doing its job.
But if you touch it and say, “Youch!!,” you’ll want to get it checked out ASAP by a licensed electrician. Don’t cut corners here or ignore the heat. Get it looked at immediately.
And what might your electrician say is the reason behind your hot circuit breaker? Here are some of the possibilities.
What Does a Hot Circuit Breaker Mean?
An Overloaded Circuit
The most common reason behind a hot circuit breaker is an overloaded circuit. That means that too many appliances or other devices are connected to it. A circuit won’t necessarily trip before it overheats.
If this is happening, your electrician may find that you have an outdated circuit breaker that isn’t right for your home’s energy use.
If you unplug some devices connected to that circuit, it may cool down.
A Malfunctioning, Defective, Or Improperly Installed Breaker
If the circuit breaker isn’t overloaded but is hot to the touch, it could mean that the breaker is bad or not installed properly. A malfunctioning breaker can be dangerous. Get it repaired or replaced by a licensed electrician right away.
Worn Out Breaker Or Electrical Panel
It could be that your circuit breaker is just too old to function well anymore. Electrical panel connections can loosen, causing overheating. Or a worn out breaker might short-circuit or draw more current than they’re supposed to.
Your electrician may also diagnose improper wire torquing, which can also char the conductors or melt nearby insulation.
Same as above: Get it checked out right away by a licensed electrician who can get it replaced safely.
